Ex Works (EXW):
Under EXW, the seller fulfills their obligation by making the goods available at their premises or another named place (like a factory or warehouse). The buyer is responsible for all subsequent tasks, including transportation, export clearance, and all costs and risks from that point onward.
The seller’s responsibility is to ensure that the goods are at the agreed-upon place for pickup by the buyer, but they’re not responsible for loading the goods onto the vehicle provided by the buyer or for export clearance.
Delivered Duty Paid (DDP):
DDP represents the maximum obligation for the seller, where they’re responsible for delivering the goods to the named place in the buyer’s country, cleared for import, and paying all applicable taxes, duties, and charges.
The seller handles all risks and costs involved in transporting the goods until they’re delivered to the buyer’s specified destination. This includes import customs clearance and paying any import duties or taxes.
In summary, EXW places the most responsibility on the buyer, who handles everything from picking up the goods to export and import procedures, while DDP puts the maximum responsibility on the seller, who delivers the goods to the buyer’s location, cleared for import, with all duties and taxes paid.
